Her family and a lot of other families clasp on the naval ship and commence on a trip of hope to safe. On the boat Ha and her family manage to grab two straw mats to call home until they reach America. Her family lives at the camp for a while, they are waiting for an American to come take her family unit under their wings. Ha and her youngest brother Vu attend the same schoolhouse while her other brothers attend college and piece of work at a mechanic. Ha hates school at first because she does not sympathise the language and the other kids are mean to her! Ha struggles with learning English language and thinks all it'south rules are very featherbrained. Ha's family finally moves into their own ii-bedroom firm. Their neighbor is a retired teacher who helps Ha larn English. Ha begins to do amend in school and makes two friends, Steven and Pam. They help Ha with the American culture and defend her from the bullies. In the finish, the family realizes Father is never coming dwelling house and that they will just have to move on with their new life in America.

Linguistic and Cultural Diversity:

The language is pretty easy to follow except for the words and names in Vietnamese. All of Ha and her siblings names are in Vietnamese which are fairly difficult to pronounce but it shows the readers how the Vietnamese language sounds and looks. The book shows the reader dissimilar aspects of Ha's Vietnamese civilisation, the city of Saigon is discussed, the food is discussed, and their daily activities in Vietnam are discussed. This may generate give-and-take with your students on how information technology seems that American cities are run fairly different than those in Vietnam.

This story is written in chapter poems. Some of the poems are only a few lines and some have up numerous pages. I really enjoyed reading this story in this format because it was something I was not used to!

Interdisciplinary Connection:

This story would best chronicle to social studies and writing. Using this book students could compare the civilisation of Vietnam to that in the United States. In the volume it is very clear that children's lives in Vietnam do not ever revolve around being in school all mean solar day, it also seemed as though children in Vietnam had more than freedom without parent watch. Students could too compare Ha's trip to America to those who have emigrated to the United States through Ellis Isle. Many students may have family members who have travelled to the United states so it may exist neat for them to interview their family if possible. This would give students a better insight on their civilisation and how everyone's travels to America may exist different.

Other Information:

This book was non a directly biography of the author's childhood just many points were from her childhood. The groundwork for the story was 100% truthful but the author included other details in the story to brand it more interesting. I institute the story to be actually fascinating and found myself thinking of my Grandpa'south trip to the U.s. while reading near Ha's story. I would definitely use this book in my classroom. I could see myself using it in a reading group setting, where the books for this set of reading groups are all about kid's trips to America. This was one of my favorite books I read during my blog feel!
